The Best One-Mile Hike

This trail had me on my knees more times in an hour than any other hike! Every few steps we saw a wonderful example of a plant in bloom, a great view of the desert, or wildlife.

Several years ago Bryce Canyon National Park boasted having the best three-mile hike in the country. Great views, interesting rock formations, diverse biomes.

Desert View Trail in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument should be high in the running for the best one-mile trail in the country, at least in March after the spring rains when the cactus are in bloom. From the top of this trail we could look south beyond the edge of the park over the scar caused by the border fence and into Mexico.

After completing this hike we drove a 21-mile loop through the desert toward Ajo Mountain. The National Park System phone app provides an informative narration simulating having a ranger in our truck with us.

We camped at Coyote Howls RV Park West in Why, Arizona. We did not hear the coyote howl, but a Eurasian Collard Dove hooted nearby.
