Stop, Look, Listen

We were planning a quick trip to the Arkansas Ozarks to see the leaves change color. We picked this destination because it is among the best places to observe this annual biological event. Then for unrelated reasons changed our plans.

Did we really want to spend a week dashing across parts of Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and another week dashing back? Before retirement we might dash across entire states in a single day to reach a planned destination. Not any more.

While some people move quickly with their RV, we get up no sooner than the sun, enjoy breakfast, sit and sip our coffee, and then carefully pack up and hitch up our trailer. On a typical moving day we exit our campsite only moments before the required checkout time. Similarly we take time to level our trailer and methodically connect to the campground’s electricity, water, and sewer. This limits the distance we plan to travel on a moving day.

Taking time at each location allows us to meet interesting people and see hidden places we would have missed dashing to and fro. Thus we typically plan two days to a week or more at a location.

And this time we noticed that the leaves on the trees were just beginning to change right where we are.

Notice the red leaves among the green

One night recently I hired back and forth with a Great Horned Owl.
Twice this week we took Shortcuts that Dad would have enjoyed.
